Experience
Ian has been involved with the infrastructure market for almost twenty years, starting with Eurotunnel and can be rightly considered the leading expert on continental European transport projects. He has advised on every single closed Austrian, Hungarian and Slovak road project as well as on the A1 Germany, most of the Greek deals, and port and airport acquisition and concession financings throughout Europe.
His major deals in recent years have included:
- leading on the High Speed 1 (HS1) project advising Borealis Infrastructure and Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan (OTPP) on the £2.1 billion purchase of one of the most famous pieces of modern infrastructure in the world, the Channel Tunnel Rail Link. This deal was awarded Infrastructure Acquisition of the Year 2010 by Infrastructure Journal and Europe Infra Deal of the Year 2010 by Project Finance International.
- closing the R1 motorway concession in Slovakia (awarded Europe Transport Deal of the Year 2009 by Project Finance Magazine/Euromoney and European Infrastructure Deal of the Year 2009 by Project Finance International);
- acting for the lenders to the Bilfinger Berger and Porr consortium for the M3 in Hungary;
- acted for Vinci/Aktor on the A3 in Romania;
- advising the lenders to Budapest Airport;
- advising a major international bank on their successful bid for Endesa's gas distribution assets in Spain; and
- advising on the acquisition of Thyssengas in Germany.
Ian is also recognised as a leading lawyer by Chambers Global for Projects in the UK.
